As in other countries, the Open Access initiatives in Portugal are relatively new, with the first initiatives dating from 2003, but only getting general attention after 2006. Despite the fact that in 2006 and 2007 several Portuguese universities have installed and set up their repositories, Portuguese OA movement was, in fact, boosted when the national initiative – RCAAP (Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal = Portugal Open Access Science Repository) - was launched in mid 2008. This presentation intends to give an overview on this project and highlight what are believed to be its major success critical factors: the governance model, the IR service model (SaaS – Software as a Service) and the communication, dissemination and training program.
