"SCOAP3, Innovation in Open Access"

The SCOAP3 initiative aims to convert to Open Access the entire peer-reviewed literature of a scientific field, High-Energy Physics, by a large-scale re-direction of current subscription funds. In the SCOAP3 model, existing high-quality journals would be centrally compensated for their peer-review services. This central compensation would be run through a call for tender which would introduce innovations in the serials market: a direct correlation between volume of articles and price as well as journal "quality" and price. SCOAP3 also presents innovation with respect to other Open Access models, in that no body would incur direct article processing charges, authors will enjoy a seamless transition. SCOAP3 is a true XXIst century answer to a global challenge, which passes through widespread global consensus. The presentation will describe the status of the fund-raising drive and outline the next steps.
