By what means does Open Access to scientific results also deals with such specialized infrastuctures?

The challenge for research infrastructures (RIs) is to provide the widest possible dissemination of scientific findings, whether they result from the use of big equipments or correspond to primary sources as in the humanities. A global access policy concerning scientific data is still to be designed, but at least open access to publications should be a baseline for RIs.

What kind of value added services do you foresee for scientists through such dedicated infrastructures?

From a scientific information point of view, such infrastructures are paving the way to eScience, where researchers are able to produce, manage, disseminate and finally compare large assets of data, thus magnifying the potentiality for new discoveries. Wide access to such data, through the use of appropriate standards and licences is central to such a prospect.

There won't be any poster session as such in the stream of the Berlin 7 Conference - but there will be a dedicated space, next to the conference hall, to display a selection of posters related to Open Access.

The session "Open access, scientific and economic stakes" will meet the advocates and critics of open access. In 2006, a study conducted for the European commission showed that the scientific journal publishing industry did not adopt a particularly competitive approach. It was putting a large number of university libraries in a difficult position by setting very inflexible subscription conditions with prices that were probably too high.

Several alternative models to these subscriptions have been proposed, including an open access journal model. These journals are financed by the authors that publish in them and are free for readers to access. These session participants will endeavour to examine to what extent the interests of researchers and the financial interests of major scientific publishers can be reconciled.

What general objectives have been set by the Berlin Open Access conference?

The objective is two-fold: to take stock of the progress achieved and to consider how to secure more involvement from the different scientific communities. The "Scientific and economic challenges" and "Scenarios for the transformation of scientific communication" sessions are particularly important in this respect.

Which scientific communities are being targeted?

All scientific communities are concerned, from so-called hard sciences to human and social sciences. Certain communities are more advanced than others and it will be beneficial for them to share their experience.

Is there any particular significance to the fact that this seventh edition is being held in France? Could this have an influence on the French open archive policy?

Several French institutions, organisations and universities in particular have signed the Berlin Declaration. Holding Berlin7 in France is an opportunity to provide a reminder of this commitment. The congress will be followed by a satellite event called "French Session", the aim of which is to strengthen France's involvement through improved synergy between the parties concerned.

How do you feel as chairman? What does it mean to you to be chosen to chair this conference?

I am of course very honoured to have been chosen to chair the Berlin7 programme committee. For me, this is recognition of my involvement in the field of scientific and technical information.
